Part 1
むかし、 山（やま） の なか で すみ を やいて いる、
まずしい わかもの が いました。
Long ago, there was a poor young man who was burning charcoal in the mountain.
ちらちら ゆき の ふる、 さむい 冬（ふゆ） の 日（ひ） の こと です。
It happened on a cold winter day when a light snow was falling.
わかもの は、 ながい あいだ ためた お金（かね） で、
ふとん を かい に まち へ でかけて いきました。
The young man went out to town to buy a futon with the money
that he had been saving for a long time.
--
まずしい わかもの が いました。
Long ago, there was a poor young man who was burning charcoal in the mountain.
ちらちら ゆき の ふる、 さむい 冬（ふゆ） の 日（ひ） の こと です。
It happened on a cold winter day when a light snow was falling.
わかもの は、 ながい あいだ ためた お金（かね） で、
ふとん を かい に まち へ でかけて いきました。
The young man went out to town to buy a futon with the money
that he had been saving for a long time.

はずんだ こころ で 山 を おりて いく と、
He went down the mountain with a bouncing heart and,
かたわら の しげみ の なか で、 ごそごそ 音（おと） が しました。
from within a bush at his side, there was a rustling sound.
「はて、 きつね でも いる の かな？」
"I wonder, if there is a fox or something?"
そっと ようす を うかがう と、
Quietly he looked into the situation, and
白（しろ）い 大（おお）きな はね が みえました。
saw a big white wing.
「つる だ。 つる が わな に かかって いる。
"It's a crane. The crane is caught in a trap.
まて、 まて。
Wait, wait.
いま たすけて やる ぞ。」
Now I will rescue you."
わかもの は かわいそう に おもって、
The young man felt sorry for the crane,
あし に かかった わな を はすそう と しました。
He tried to take the trap off of the leg.

Part 2
そこ へ、 りょうし が あらわれました。
And then, a hunter appeared.
「なに を する。
"What are you doing.
おまえ は わし の えもの を よこどり しよう と いう の か。」
You dare to snatch my game?"
りょうし は、 わかもの を にらみました。
The hunter glared at the young man.
「かわいそうだ から、 にがして やって くれ。
"Because it is miserable, can you please set it free?
いや なら、 ここ に お金 が ある。
If not, I have money here.
この つる を うって くれぬ か。」
Wouldn't you sell the crane to me?"
わかもの は、 ふとん を かう お金 を りょうし に わたしました。
The young man handed the hunter the money for buying the futon.

そこ へ、 りょうし が あらわれました。
And then, a hunter appeared.
「なに を する。
"What are you doing.
おまえ は わし の えもの を よこどり しよう と いう の か。」
You dare to snatch my game?"
りょうし は、 わかもの を にらみました。
The hunter glared at the young man.
「かわいそうだ から、 にがして やって くれ。
"Because it is miserable, can you please set it free?
いや なら、 ここ に お金 が ある。
If not, I have money here.
この つる を うって くれぬ か。」
Wouldn't you sell the crane to me?"
わかもの は、 ふとん を かう お金 を りょうし に わたしました。
The young man handed the hunter the money for buying the futon.

「さあ、 もう こんな ところ へ くる ん じゃ ない ぞ。」
"So, don't come back again to this place."
わかもの は そう いって、 つる を 空（そら） へ にがして やりました。
The young man said that, and set the crane free into the sky.
「くうーー」
"Kuu... (sound of crane)."
つる は うれし そうに ひとこえ なく と、
The crane sang happily, and
わかもの の あたま の うえ を 大きく まわって、
and went around in big circles over the young man's head, and
空 へ きえて いきました。
dissapeared into the sky.
つる を みおくる と、 もう まち へ いく ようじ は ありません。
He sent off the crane, and he had no more business to go to the town.
わかもの は きた みち を、 ゆっくり 山 へ もどって いきました。
The young man slowly returned to the mountain, the way he had come.

「さあ、 もう こんな ところ へ くる ん じゃ ない ぞ。」
"So, don't come back again to this place."
わかもの は そう いって、 つる を 空（そら） へ にがして やりました。
The young man said that, and set the crane free into the sky.
「くうーー」
"Kuu... (sound of crane)."
つる は うれし そうに ひとこえ なく と、
The crane sang happily, and
わかもの の あたま の うえ を 大きく まわって、
and went around in big circles over the young man's head, and
空 へ きえて いきました。
dissapeared into the sky.
つる を みおくる と、 もう まち へ いく ようじ は ありません。
He sent off the crane, and he had no more business to go to the town.
わかもの は きた みち を、 ゆっくり 山 へ もどって いきました。
The young man slowly returned to the mountain, the way he had come.

つぎ の 日 の あさ の こと です。
It happened the morning of the next day.
みた こと も ない ほど うつくしい むすめ が、 やって きました。
A beautiful girl who he had never seen before approached.
そして、 「わたし を よめさん に して ください。」
And then, "Please make me your bride",
と、 いう の です。
she said.
「とんでも ねえ。
"Of course not.
わし は、 この とおり びんぼうな すみやき じゃ。
As you can see I am a poor charcoal maker.
よめさん を もらって も、 くわせる こと も できない。」
If I have a bride, I can not even feed her."
わかもの は ことわりました が、 むすめ は、
The young man refused, but the girl said
「あなた の よめさん に して くれたら、
"If you will take me for your bride,
いくら まずしくて も かまいません。」
no matter how poor we are I don't mind,"
そういって、 わかもの と くらす こと に なりました。
she said like that, and came to live with the young man.

つぎ の 日 の あさ の こと です。
It happened the morning of the next day.
みた こと も ない ほど うつくしい むすめ が、 やって きました。

そして、 「わたし を よめさん に して ください。」

と、 いう の です。
she said.

わし は、 この とおり びんぼうな すみやき じゃ。

よめさん を もらって も、 くわせる こと も できない。」
If I have a bride, I can not even feed her."
わかもの は ことわりました が、 むすめ は、
The young man refused, but the girl said
「あなた の よめさん に して くれたら、
"If you will take me for your bride,
いくら まずしくて も かまいません。」
no matter how poor we are I don't mind,"
そういって、 わかもの と くらす こと に なりました。
she said like that, and came to live with the young man.

わかもの の くらし は、 すっかり かわりました。
The young man's life completely changed.
あさ め を さますと、
When he woke up in the morning,
いろり に は もう あたたかい 火（ひ） が もえて いました。

「ごはん が できました よ。」

と、 きれいな よめさん が よびます。

いえ の なか も きれいに かたづいて、

しごと も どんどん はかどって いきます。
her work goes on and on.
「わし の ところ へ よめ が くる なんて、 ゆめ みたいな はなし だ。」
"The wife coming to my place is like a dream."
わかもの は、 しあわせ そう でした。
The young man seems to be happy.

よめさん は 山 の なか に ある、
おいしい たべもの を よく しって いて、
じょうずに つくります。
His wife knows very well the delicious food in the mountain,

いえ の なか も きれいに かたづいて、

わかもの は、 しあわせ そう でした。

「うら の こや を かたづけて いましたら、
"While cleaning the hut behind the house,
ほこり を かぶった はたおり が ありました。
I found a dusty loom.
わたし に はた を おらせて ください。
May I please weave?
そのかわり、 はた を おって いる あいだ は、
However, while I am weaving,
けっして なか を のそかないで ください。」
please never look inside,"
よめさん は そう いって、 こや へ はいる と、 と を しめました。
his wife said, and entered the hut, and closed the door.

よる も ひる も、 こや の なか から ぬの を おる 音 が、
きこえて いました。
Night and day, he heard the sound of weaving from within the hut.

すこし やすんで めし を くったら どう じゃ。」
Why don't you take a little rest and eat a meal?"
わかもの は しんぱい を して、
the young man worried, and
そと から こえ を かけました。
offered his wife from outside.
けれども、 へんじ は ありません。
But, there was no reply.
わかもの は、 ますます しんぱい に なりました。
The young man became more and more worried.
なんど も こや の と を あけよう と しました が、
じっと がまん を して いました。
He tried to open the door to the hut several times,
but he remained patient.
四（よっ）日（か）め に なって、
On the fourth day,
やっと こや の なか から よめさん が でて きました。
finally his wife came out from inside the hut.

Part 6
よめさん は すっかり やせて、 ふらふら して いました。
His wife was quite thin, and felt dizzy.
やせおとろえて、 くび ばかり ながく かんじられました。
He felt that she had become thin and weak, and that her neck was too long.
「こや の なか に、 おりあげた ぬの が あります。
"Inside the hut, there is cloth that I finished weaving.
それ を まち へ うり に いって ください。
Please go to town and sell it.
きっと たかい ね で かって くれます。」
Someone will buy it at a very high price."
「そんな こと は、 どう でも よい。
"That doesn't matter at all.
わし は おまえ の からだ が しんぱい じゃ。」
I am worried about your condition,"
わかもの が いう と、 よめさん は にっこり ほほえみました。
the young man said, and his wife smiled.
「わたし の こと は、 しんぱい なさらずに。
"Please don't worry about me.
さあ、 はやく わたし の いう こと を きいて ください。」
Now, hurry and please do what I said."

よめさん は すっかり やせて、 ふらふら して いました。
His wife was quite thin, and felt dizzy.
やせおとろえて、 くび ばかり ながく かんじられました。
He felt that she had become thin and weak, and that her neck was too long.
「こや の なか に、 おりあげた ぬの が あります。
"Inside the hut, there is cloth that I finished weaving.
それ を まち へ うり に いって ください。
Please go to town and sell it.
きっと たかい ね で かって くれます。」
Someone will buy it at a very high price."
「そんな こと は、 どう でも よい。
"That doesn't matter at all.
わし は おまえ の からだ が しんぱい じゃ。」

わかもの が いう と、 よめさん は にっこり ほほえみました。
the young man said, and his wife smiled.
「わたし の こと は、 しんぱい なさらずに。
"Please don't worry about me.
さあ、 はやく わたし の いう こと を きいて ください。」
Now, hurry and please do what I said."

わかもの は ぬの を もって、 まち へ でかけて いきました。
The young man went out to town, carrying the cloth.
おみせ の しゅじん は、 その ぬの を みて、 びっくりしました。
On seeing the cloth, the storekeeper was surprised.
「ほほう、 これは すばらしい。
"Great, this is wonderful.
いま まで みた こと も ない ぬの じゃ。
I have never seen such a cloth.
八（はち）十（じゅう）りょう、 いや 百（ひゃく）りょう だしましょう。
I will pay you 80 ryou, no, 100 ryou.
こんど もって こられたら、 二（に）百りょう で かいあげましょう。」
Next time if you bring more, I will buy it for 200 ryou.
め の まえ に、
In front of him,
百りょう の こばん を つまれて、
100 ryou of gold coins were piled up,
わかもの は からだ が ふるえる ほど、 おどろいて いました。
the young man was so surprised that his body shook.

「わし に も、 いよいよ うん と いう もの が むいて きた ん だ。
"Finally fortune has turned to me too!
いえ に かえったら、 すぐ また ぬの を おらせよう。」
When I return home, I will make her weave clothes again soon."
せなか の つつみ に は、
In the pack on his back,
ずっしり と おもい 百りょう の お金 が あります。
there was the very heavy 100 ryou's money.
いま まで みた こと も ない お金 です。
It is money which I have never seen before.
わかもの の こころ は すっかり かわって しまいました。
The young man's heart changed completely.
山 の なか の いえ へ もどる と、
When he returned to his home in the mountains,
わかもの は め を かがやかせ ながら、
The young man's eyes brightened while,
よめさん に はなし を しました。
he told the story to his wife.

「わし に も、 いよいよ うん と いう もの が むいて きた ん だ。
"Finally fortune has turned to me too!
いえ に かえったら、 すぐ また ぬの を おらせよう。」

"I want to keep our life as it is from now on, together with you.
まち へ など いきたく は ありません。」
I never want to go to town and so forth"
よめさん は しずかに いいました。
the wife quietly said.
けれども わかもの は ききません。
But the young man did not understand her.

「もう いちど だけ じゃ。
"Just once more.
そしたら ふたり で まち へ でて、
Then let's go to town together, and
大きな やしき を たてて、
build a big mansion, and
いつまでも おもしろ おかしく くらす の じゃ。」
live a funny and interesting life forever."
「わたし は、 あなた と ふたり で、
ずっと この まま の くらし が したい の です。

まち へ など いきたく は ありません。」

こや の なか で いっしん に はた を おっている の は、
一わ の やせた つる でした。
inside the hut there was one slender crane weaving intently.
つる は くちばし で 一ぽん 一ぽん からだ から はね を ぬいて、
With its bill, the crane was pulling out feathers from its body one by one, and
ぬの を おって いた の です。
was weaving the cloth from them.
「いま やっと、 おりあがりました。
"Now at last, I finished weaving.
けれども、
But,
こんな すがた を みられて は、
because you see me in this appearance,
もう ここ に いられません。
I can not stay here anymore.
わたし は、 あなた に たすけて いただいた つる です。
I am the crane that received help from you.
さあ、 この ぬの を まち へ もって いって、
So, take this cloth to town, and
しあわせ に くらして ください。
please live happily.
さようなら。」

わかもの は おどろいて、 たちすくみました。
The young man was surprised and petrified.

こや の なか で いっしん に はた を おっている の は、
一わ の やせた つる でした。

わかもの は なきながら、
While weeping the young man,
いつまでも 空 に むかって さけび つづけて いました。
faced into the sky and kept shouting forever.

Saying that the crane,
はね の ぬけた つばさ を いたいたしそう に ひろげ、
painfully spread her plucked wings,
「くるるーー」

「お金 など いらぬ。
"I don't even need money.
わし が わるかった。
I was bad.

わかもの は なきながら、
While weeping the young man,
